Sony Blu-ray Players

Sony has been building and selling some of the best consumer electronics since 1945. Over the years, Sony has become one of the world's largest electronics manufacturers and a leader in technology as well. The interesting thing about Sony is that it has also become one of the world's largest entertainment companies as well, producing a large variety of music, movies and other media. Sony was one of the first, and strongest, supporters of the Blu-ray standard and Sony blu ray players have been available from the inception of Blu-ray. In addition to their support for Blu-ray through their Sony blu-ray players, they have been producing their movies and other media on Blu-ray discs since release. You will find several features in a Sony blu ray player that are innovations that other manufacturers later introduced in their players.

Quick Start-up Mode – This is an "instant-on" feature that allows the player to operate within 6 seconds from the time a disc is inserted into the player. Most of the other Blu-ray players on the market take quite a long time to start playing the disc (some as along as 45 seconds). A Sony blu ray player with this feature will have you watching your movie in a snap.Precision Cinema Upscale – A Sony blu ray player with this feature does a much better job of delivering crystal clear backgrounds and eliminates motion blur from moving objects. It does this through advanced circuitry that utilizes a high bandwidth analog to digital converter to sense changes at the pixel level. Most other players focus on the entire scan line and as a result have less opportunity for improvement.

Dolby® TrueHD decoder built-in - Sony blu-ray players have an advanced audio decoder built into their hardware that can decode Dolby TrueHD audio in the player. Most of the other players require this conversion to be done externally by an expensive piece of audio gear. The Sony blu-ray player does this for you and delivers the sharpest and clearest audio possible.

DVD Upscale to 1080P – The Sony blu-ray players will also improve the quality of your older DVD’s. A Sony blu ray player has the ability to upscale the video from a standard DVD to 1080p and will actually provide a better picture than if the DVD were played on a standard player. This allows you to enjoy both your new Blu-ray content as well as your collection of DVD’s on the same player.

Bonus View – Another nice feature of a Sony blu ray player is BonusView. This feature allows you to open a second window on-screen to enjoy additional content from a Blu-ray disc. This is a nice picture-in-picture feature and can be used for any content on the disc, such as the director’s comments.

Bravia Sync – Bravia Sync allows a Sony blu-ray player to connect to other components in your media cabinet through HDMI and control their functions. This applies to any component that adheres to the HDMI CEC standard. This means you can use a single remote to control all of your compatible media gear and eliminate a lot of clutter.

BD Live Ready – This feature allows you to enjoy additional content and features from the internet for the Blu-ray disc you are viewing. The Sony blu-ray player is connected to your home network through its network connection on the rear panel. This will allow it to receive this additional content. These features could include additional scenes or outtakes for the film. Other bonus features could be games or trailers for other related movies about to be released. This network connection also allows you to stay current with firmware releases for the player as these can be downloaded as well. This means as even more new features are added to your player, you can download and enable them through this network connection.

True Cinema quality – A Sony blu ray player has the ability to display a movie in full 1080p 24fps format. This is in addition to its 1080p 60fps setting. The 24fps setting actually matches the specifications for how a film is originally shot and will give the truest reproduction possible, just as if you were viewing it in the theater. Most other players will have to convert the film to a resolution they support and there will be degradation in the picture quality as a result. Being able to display these Blu-ray videos in their native 24fps format, means that you can enjoy the film in its intended format, just as the director intended.

USB Port – The Sony blu ray player has a USB port available to add extra memory for certain features. The BD Live feature requires you to have additional memory installed for some of its added abilities and this USB port will allow you to connect the storage you need. This USB port is recessed on the rear of the unit.

HDMI – The Sony blu ray player is fully HDMI version 1.3 compatible. This means you can use the HDMI connector to supply HD video and audio to your monitor. The HDMI connection was designed to provide the very best possible picture and audio through a single cable. This connection will also enable you to utilize other features available on the Sony blu ray player like Bravia Sync.

Full HD resolution – A Sony blu ray player allows you to enjoy the widest possible selection of resolutions and media. The Sony blu ray player supports resolutions of 420p, 1080i and 1080p at both 60fps and 24fps. It also allows you to select both the 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios as well, to give you a lot of combinations.

Dolby® TrueHD /DTS®-HD Bitstream Out – In addition to the onboard decoding of the Dolby TrueHD, the Sony blu-ray players will also send this audio through the HDMI connection to be decoded by an audio receiver, if you prefer. Having the choice between the two is a nice feature that guarantees you the flexibility needed for any media setup you might have.
