The sale of Blu ray discs in the UK this year has been given a huge boost by the release of new blockbuster movies like James Bond’s Quantum of Solace and Batman’s The Dark Knight according to the latest figures that have been released.
In the midst of the current recession the sale of Blu ray discs has continued to increase throughout 2009 based on data taken from the Official Chart Company by the British Video Association (BVA). Compared to the same period last year the sale of Blu ray disc in 2009 has risen to 3.1 million with over 1500 Blu ray movies now available for purchase in the UK.

Disc seller are blaming the current global recession and the increase in piracy online as the reason for a drop in the sale of both Blu-ray and DVD’s during 2008.
With a drop in the sale of Blu-ray and DVD discs by 4.8 percent worldwide during 2008, disc companies are blaming widespread online piracy, which appears to be steadily increasing and the current global economic climate as the reason for the slump.

With the current Blu-ray market’s relatively young nature the need for manufactures to offer eye catching feature with their players is essential to bring in new customers and Phillips claims that the new BDP7300 come with a few interesting extras.
The relatively slow start-up times that are inherent in most Blu-ray players that are currently available at the moment are one of the biggest reasons why many consumers are reluctant to go out and buy new Blu-ray equipment say Phillips.

A recent announcement by a number of studios have has been made that at the beginning of 2010 user will be allowed to create backup of the Blu-ray discs they own.
Something that has been a grey legal area for a number of years now is the legality of making backups of media like DVD and Blu-ray from discs that have been brought. Any users of Blu-ray technology will, from the beginning of next year be given the option to make single and legal copy of any Blu-ray media that they purchase.

The latest research from Futuresource consulting has found that by the end of 2009 over 100 million Blu-ray discs will be purchased by customers in Japan, the US and in Western Europe.
Even in the midst of the current economic climate it has been noted by this latest research that with the cost of buying Blu-ray players falling significantly and the massive increase in the number of High Definition TV’s being used the interest in Blu-ray discs are set to go up as a result.

In order to monitor new 3D technology within the home the Blu-ray Disc association is not taking any risk and will be creating a new 3D task force.
Since the initial release of Blu-ray technology it has been hard work to improve its popularity as the main media format. This is in part due to the current proliferation of DVD, which will be a hard technology to compete with, and also because other than the HD capabilities of Blu-ray there is little else to tell it apart from DVD. The introduction of this 3D technology could be the key to setting Blu-ray apart from other media formats like DVD.

A brand new Blu-ray player that is the first device in the world to be capable of playing DivX HD 1080p video files was recently announced by the major manufacturer of electrical equipment, LG.
The first DivX HD 1080p certified Blu-ray player in the world that is capable of playing back both Blu-ray disks and DivX HD video files was recently announced by LG.

With hopes from the Apple that the sales at its iTunes Store and high def rentals will become the future of movie viewing in the home, although it may be quite a way off, Steve Jobs, the CEO for Apple has called Blu-ray “a world of hurt”, which possibly refers to licensing costs.
Blu-ray Disk (BD) video technology is beginning to move further into the mainstream according to a statement earlier in the month from the NPD Group. The senior director at CEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association), Dave Pedigo said in a recent article in TWICE (This Week in Consumer Electronics) that consumers were definitely seeing a difference between high-definition downloads and Blu-ray video according to a small and informal internal survey of staff members of CEDIA.

Sony has recently announced a release date and price for its new incredibly stylish BDP-S360 Blu-ray player, which comes at a price of just £230 meeting its claims of being an entry level unit and is due to go on sale in the UK in July.
The HT-FS3 and HT-SS360 surround sound systems will be two other new releases that are due for release alongside the BPD-S360 Blu-ray player.

It has been announced that equipment manufacturer, Oppo is to release one of the most highly anticipated pieces of Blu-ray hardware in history.
Although only members of the public who mailed the company to show interest in the player will be able to buy one, the BDP-83 is to be released by Oppo Digital to the general public following a drawn out beta testing and early-adopter sale program. May is the date that has been set for shipping of the player.
