The somewhat resigned and underwhelming way in which Toshiba announced the release of its new BDX2000 standalone Blu ray player and P500 Blu ray laptop came as no surprise to many either in terms of the products or their introduction. For many the only real surprise is when it was coming rather than if it was coming.
The assistant general manager at Toshiba information systems, Olivier van Wynendaele gave a very clear impression that Toshiba was not at all happy with having to move into the world of Blu ray whilst at the same time saying that Blu ray was something that is here and now.
In an effort to destroy any ideas regarding the distracted and somewhat late entry into the market by Toshiba van Wynendaele advised “We believe that the market for Blu-ray players will be mature in 2010.”
He went on to add “Blu-ray delivers on its promises now. We have customers… who we need to give an answer to bring this player to consumers.”
Following his big sell on Blu ray technology he then went on to say that Blu ray is merely another step towards offering new services to its customers.
He said “Also we believe that Blu-ray… is a transition to the next generation of devices… and services. Of course Blu-ray is not the only [solution], you have alternatives… like SD card, hard drive and online distribution now.”
Blu ray is now hugely popular for HD quality media, however, and this was something that van Wynendale could not deny. “You will see in the near future features coming through the Blu-ray devices and it’s important that Toshiba will bring this to our customers, too,” adding “when it comes to the ultimate Blu-ray experience, Blu-ray delivers a stunning solution,” he said.
