» New ‘Big Room’ standards added to Blu ray by THX

The adding of a new set of criteria for the performance of Blu ray disc players was announced at the Cedia Expo 2009 by THX, the Atlanta-based home theatre and professional standards developer.

An up-scaled Pioneer Blu ray player and the first Blu ray disc player from Lexicon will become the first two Blu-ray Disc players to receive the new THX stamp.

Almost 400 different points are covered by the measurement criteria for Blu ray players and these points are very similar to the standards that have been set by THX for display technologies.

In an effort to duplicate the THX-certified performance as closely as possible the company is working hard to provide a set of performance level indicators for both devices and displays that are used in home-theatre systems by consumers, manufacturers and installers alike.

The way in which the Blu ray players display SD images that have been up-converted to a HD format like 1080p and standard-definition images are covered by the THX Blu ray standard as well as covering how Blu ray disc’s HD content is presented on the player.

The THX education director and senior fellow, John Dahl advised recently “What’s on all the various discs the Blu-ray player plays - Blu-ray and DVD as well - has to come out unblemished and free from all distractive artifacts - some of which can be quite hard to quantify.”

A new certification and product design program that brings a professional performance and audio quality to loudspeakers, pre-amplifiers and prosumer amplifiers is the description being given for the Big Room concept.

The company advised “THX Big Room bridges the gap between the consumer and professional audio worlds, offering custom installers more hardware choices for designing large, multi-row media rooms and home theatres.”
