» Microsoft confirms it has no plans for Blu ray on the Xbox360

Recent speculation that Microsoft may be considering the introduction of Blu ray drives for its Xbox360 has led to a significant amount of excitement from many consumers and experts everywhere.

The speculation was brought about by comments that had been made recently by the CEO of Microsoft, although these theories have now been totally destroyed following a statement from Major Nelson, the online voice of Xbox Live, who has made it clear that there are no plans for Xbox 360 to use Blu ray devices and that Xbox will be committing to downloadable content.

Larry Hryb who is known online as Major Nelson and is the director of programming for XBL recently wrote “As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment starts very soon when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies. With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition.”

A recent interview that pointed to a possibility that at some point in the future there may be Blu ray players added as an add-on accessory has led to this latest clarification by Nelson.

During this interview Steve Ballmer, the CEO at Microsoft advised “Well I don’t know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you’ll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.”

The faith in the 360’s downloadable movie content has already been expressed, and it appears likely that it will continue to follow the download route as Microsoft’s strategy would need to be drastically moved and serious investment would be required in a new physical media drive.
