» CD and DVD a long way from being replaced by Blu ray

Experts believe that eventually Blu ray may make a big impact on the PC market but for the next five years at least the impact its has will be a limited one.

Recently released research has found that Blu ray devices have a long way to go before they are considered the norm in the current PC marketplace.

According to a report from iSuppli, an analyst company there has been some growth in the adoption of Blu ray technology in the consumer market but by 2013 there is unlikely to be an increase of anything more than 16 percent.

This means that CD and DVD are still holding fast with an 80 percent overall share of the market even with this 3.6 percent increase for this year.

A senior analyst for mobile memory and storage at iSuppli, Michael Yang the greatest problem that Blu ray currently faces is its cost.

In a recent statement he advised “The cost issue is amplified by the fact that the library of content is so small that there really isn’t a reason for users to switch at the moment. While this is changing and studios are rolling out more Blu-ray content every week, there remains a long way to go.”

At the moment Blu ray drives simply don’t offer everyday PC users anything new or special and unlike previous technology like floppy disk and CD technology, which moved over to allow for new drive technology to take over, the CD and DVD have a long way to go before they are replaced.

Yang said “It’s undeniable that Blu ray delivers a higher-definition picture, better sound quality and larger storage space for home entertainment. However, these benefits may have little or no value when viewing the content on a smaller desktop or laptop PC screen and using poor speakers.”
